Fortnightly Tax Calculator
Fortnightly pay after tax, 2026–27
2026–27 resident rates, low income tax offset and 2% Medicare levy. Per-fortnight tax is based on 26 pays, the way ATO fortnightly tables work.
Most Australian employers pay every two weeks, so a fortnightly tax calculator is the quickest way to check a payslip or a job offer. Type in your gross pay for the fortnight, tick the boxes that match your TFN declaration, and choose whether your financial year has the usual 26 pays or the occasional 27. The result shows your take-home pay each fortnight, the tax withheld, and the full-year totals.
Fortnightly pay after tax table
Figures for 2026–27 assume 26 pays, the tax-free threshold claimed and no HELP debt.

How fortnightly tax is calculated
The ATO's withholding system works from weekly amounts. Your employer halves your fortnightly pay to get a weekly figure, applies the formula for your tax scale, and doubles the result. Our calculator gets to almost the same answer by annualising your pay over 26 fortnights, applying the 2026–27 tax rates, the low income tax offset and the 2% Medicare levy, then dividing by 26.
A small difference of a dollar or two against your payslip is normal, because the ATO formula rounds to whole dollars at each step.
Why 26 or 27 pays makes a difference
Withholding tables are built on 26 fortnightly pays a year. In the rare year that holds 27 pay days, your income for that financial year is about 4% higher than the tables expect, while each pay is still taxed as if there were only 26.
On $3,000 a fortnight, the extra pay could leave you around $365 short when you lodge. The ATO asks employers to tell staff when a 27-pay year is coming, and its withholding schedule lists small extra amounts you can ask to have withheld each fortnight to cover the gap. Choose “27 fortnights” in the calculator to see an estimate for your own pay.
Converting fortnightly pay to monthly and yearly
- Yearly: fortnightly pay × 26.
- Monthly: fortnightly pay × 26 ÷ 12, which is about 2.17 fortnights a month.
- Weekly: fortnightly pay ÷ 2.
Budgeting with “two pays a month” works for most months, but twice a year a month contains three paydays. Many people use that third pay for savings or bills that only come once or twice a year. If a lender or landlord asks about your income, check whether they want this take-home figure or your pay before tax; gross vs net income explained covers which one each of them uses.
Fortnightly pay and your marginal tax rate
A pay rise does not push all your income into a higher bracket. Only the extra dollars are taxed at your top rate. For example, a rise from $3,000 to $3,100 a fortnight increases tax per pay from about $595 to $627, so you keep about $68 of the extra $100. Our explainer on marginal versus effective tax shows why your average rate is always lower than your top bracket.
Study loans and the Medicare levy surcharge
If you tick the HELP box, a compulsory repayment is added once your yearly income passes $69,528. On $4,000 a fortnight that is about $199 extra per pay.
Separately, singles earning more than $105,000 in 2026–27 without an appropriate level of private hospital cover pay the Medicare levy surcharge of 1% to 1.5% when they lodge. It is not normally withheld from your pay, so budget for it if it applies to you.
Ways to keep more of each fortnight
- Check your TFN declaration so the tax-free threshold is claimed with your main employer only.
- Consider salary sacrificing part of each pay into super, where it is taxed at 15% instead of your marginal rate.
- If you have large regular work-related deductions, a withholding variation can lower the tax taken from each pay instead of waiting for a refund.

Fortnightly pay questions
How do I turn a fortnightly pay into a monthly amount?
Multiply the fortnightly figure by 26 and divide by 12. Simply doubling it undercounts, because the average month contains about 2.17 fortnights.
What is a 27th pay year?
A year has 365 or 366 days, slightly more than 26 fortnights. Every decade or so, a fortnightly pay day falls on both the first and last days of the same financial year, giving 27 pays in that year.
Does a 27th pay mean I get a pay rise?
No. Your salary has not changed; one extra payment simply falls inside the financial year. Some employers instead divide an annual salary across 27 smaller pays in that year, so check your payslip.
Can I change how much tax is taken out each fortnight?
Yes. You can ask your employer in writing to withhold extra each pay, or apply to the ATO for a withholding variation if you have deductions that will reduce your tax.
Is fortnightly tax higher than weekly tax?
No. The fortnightly tax is roughly double the weekly tax on the same yearly income. The total tax for the year depends only on what you earn, not on how often you are paid.
